Supported Work Experience

This may be suitable for young people aged from 16 based at a school, college or post 16 provider (named in Section I of the EHCP) who require term-time, weekly appropriate work experience which fits in with their schedule of study. It may be funded by the placement via EHCP or under our own Access to Work scheme.

There is no prerequisite qualification expected.
We provide high quality Job Coaching. Students may also benefit from our other services such as programme planning, therapeutic and life- skills support in ‘preparation for adulthood’.

Work experience begins with the minimum of one half day (4 hours ) per week over a course of 6 weeks; which can be achieved in a flexible and gradually increasing, supported transition until the four weekly hours are achieved. This may be with one employment placement or can be spread over two or more ‘taster’ placements. ‘Work experience’ can then extend on to a fully structured and monitored ‘Supported Internship’ programme with a single employer lasting for a year or more.

Our young people having supported ‘Work Experience’ are expected to require a higher level of support than general workplace trainees or apprentices and are offered 1-1 support in the form of a specialist job coach.
Those SEN students age 16 – 25 with a keen desire to work and to live independently. They should either already be independent travellers or be willing to train to become one. There is no prerequisite for qualifications to complete our work experience programmes.

We may take direction from the current placement and also invite the young person and their parents for specialist profiling sessions to enable us to find out more about them and what they would like to achieve from the programme. We provide questionnaires, use visual aids, on-line or telephone discussion, or practical experience to identify the appropriate direction of the placement. Typically, we would place the young person in a workplace which has been carefully selected for them based on their needs and abilities, interests and aspirations; as well as the likelihood of future employment success.
